Two Countries in turmoil as Invasion Rages On

The Invasion of Russia has resulted in a disastrous reaction from the world against Russia. Peace talks remain unresolved as the country continues its operation.

The Invasion of Ukraine has now entered a second week. President Vladimir Putin vowed to not let up his invasion, even as the warring sides met for ceasefire talks. “Russia intends to continue the uncompromising fight against militants of nationalist armed groups,” Putin said, according to a Kremlin account of a call with French President Emmanuel Macron. Ukraine and Russia met shook hands across a table, the Ukrainian delegates in military clothing and the Russians in business suits. The first talks on Monday resulted in no resolution. Kyiv says it will not accept any Russian “ultimatums”. Macron said he feared that “worse is yet to come.” The invasion has created a large exodus of refugees across Europe.

Russian and Ukrainian officials take part in peace talks.

The resulting action against Russia has further isolated the aggressive nation. Sanctions have been put into place. The economy has taken a major hit with the removal from SWIFT as well as countries refusing to purchase Russian Oil. Multiple companies have shuttered sales in the country including Apple and Nike. The interest rate has more than doubled. The ruble has lost 30% of its value.

Thousands of Russian soldiers have been killed as a result of this act of aggression. While a long military column appears stalled north of Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, Russian troops seized Kherson, a Black Sea city of 290,000 people, after a three-day siege that left it short of food and medicine. Russian troops have besieged the port city of Mariupol, leaving the city without water or electricity. Kharkiv continues to be plagued by shelling. The UN General Assembly voted 141-5 to demand that Russia “immediately” withdraw from Ukraine. Only four countries supported Russia, and China abstained.
